CBER Clark County Tourism Index

Like the Southern Nevada Index of Leading Economic Indicators, the Tourism Index appears to be leveling off. November 2009 gross gaming revenue rose over November 2008 and over the previous month. Unfortunately, hotel/motel occupancy dropped below 80% and the number of passengers into McCarran fell as well. Convention visitor numbers are off, placing more strain on an already fragile sector. The wildcard for future activity is the recent opening of more than 6,000 hotel rooms at CityCenter. We think that the new rooms are likely to cannibalize occupancy at existing properties, potentially bringing more bad news in the form of hotel/casino bankruptcies down the road.
